MENTAL GAME COACHING CAN HELP YOUR ATHLETE IF THEY...
Perform inconsistently in competition.
Get easily upset after mistakes.
Can’t take their skills to competition.
Are fearful of making mistakes.
Worry too much about what others think.
Feel tight or anxious in competition.
WHAT IS MENTAL GAME COACHING?
What's the point, anyway?
As a parent or coach, you want your athlete(s) to be mentally tough and perform with confidence during competition. It's heartbreaking to see athletes beat themselves up mentally or give up on themselves.

Mental Game Coaching helps athletes learn mental skills to:
-
Improve confidence, concentration (focus) and composure;
-
Let go of mistakes; and
-
Uncover negative self-talk and beliefs that interfere with peak performance.
You know that your athlete has the potential to be great, help them see it too!
What mental coaching isn't:

Mental Game Coaches do not:
-
Diagnose mental health conditions;
-
Prescribe medication;
-
Work on personal challenges (i.e. working through a breakup, coping with an addictive behaviour, etc.); or
-
Work with or on abnormal behaviour (i.e. schizophrenia).

I dread the car ride home after a poor performance. Can you help with this?
The drive home with a parent after a loss or poor performance can be one of the most anxiety-inducing times for a young athlete. For you, the parent, the silence is deafening. Their criticism breaks your heart. It's the gut-wrenching feeling of wanting to help your child but not knowing how.
-
What if you knew what to say (or not say) in those moments?
-
What if you didn't feel like you had to coach your child because they had the skills to productively process the event?
-
What would you give for those car rides to be filled with joy and pride rather than dread and fear?
Mental Game Coaching can help you too! Contact us for our free parent resources.
03
How can this help my child?
Mental Game Coaching uses Applied Sport Psychology to help athletes by enhancing confidence, improving focus, increasing practice efficiency and managing the nerves of performance. I'm sure you've seen your athlete:
-
Be way too hard on themselves;
-
Let others’ expectations, negative self-talk, or bad calls rattle them out of their best performance; and
-
Allow one mistake to turn into a downward spiral.
It doesn't need to be this way! Tapping into the power of the mind is a game changer!
04
What is the best age to start?
The best age to introduce Applied Sports Psychology/ Mental Game Coaching to young athletes is typically around 10 to 12 years old — depending on the athlete. Kids are usually mature enough at this age to understand the concepts we teach and why they participate in a mental training program. However, every athlete is so different! Schedule yourself a free Mental Game Assessment and see how your athlete does with the questions.
WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
I'm sure you're wondering: What am I committing to? What can I expect?
Here's an overview of the process:
1
The athlete is sent a Pre-Coaching Assessment to determine their unique focus areas for the Mental Game Coaching program.
2
The Mental Game Coach will make a game plan based on the assessment (free of charge).
3
The parent and athlete meet virtually with the coach to review the assessment and determine if the relationship and goals are a "good fit" (free of charge).
4
If the athlete agrees to the game plan, mental coaching begins. Your athlete learns how to think better, improve confidence, stay calm after
mistakes and focus on doing their best.
5
The Mental Game Coach will meet virtually with the athlete regularly and provide drills and objectives to help improve the mental game in competition.
6
The athlete completes assigned drills and objectives and comes prepared to discuss their mental game with the coach.
About Me
I’m a self-proclaimed head-case, so, I consider myself an expert in managing the mental side of performance 🤪. But in all seriousness, there's a quote by Richard Bach — "We teach best what we most need to learn". I grew up struggling with my mindset and to this day I still work hard to manage my inner battles. But even with those battles, I’ve managed to compete on the world stage (in Wuhan, China in 2019) and have excelled in various sports throughout my life. I've also managed to sneak into the 0.1% of Canadian Armed Forces members who have achieved the highest level of fitness in the military.
Outside of my athletic resume, I've completed a graduate degree in Mental Performance (Applied Sport Psychology) and have learned from some of the best mentors and teachers in the field, including Dr. Terry Orlick and Dr. Patrick Cohn. And, perhaps most importantly, I'm a mom. Until I became a mom, I don't think I really understood the 'Mama Bear' analogy. I would do anything for my son. I want him to be happy, successful, confident and proud to be the person he is. And, I bet that you want the same thing for your kid (or kids).
